The goal that was or was not depending on your supportIt was meant to be the comeback of all comebacks. The USA is not really a football nation. In fact they refer to it as soccer. England imagined that they would walk over them and for a time Slovenia was on the verge of giving them a thorough beating. In a stirring comeback they created two goals from nothing and scored a third which was disallowed. In an instant the chat rooms were hot with all sorts of vile abuse directed at the referee. In truth that was a terrible decision. The USA won fair and square. It was disgraceful that they were not allowed to enjoy the full merits of their glorious comeback. One has to have sympathy with the USA. They did put in the effort but some rather dodgy referee decisions put them back. It is something that the FA has to look at because it is happening all the time. People feel that there should be an appeal decision that follows the same rules that tennis instituted when Serena Williams was shamelessly cheated during her match against Jennifer Capriati at the 2004 US Open. It was quite clear then that the referees were not invincible. They sometimes made blatant mistakes and it required the use of an independent mechanism to verify their decisions. Of course this system can be open to abuse when players just want to slow down the play. That is why there ought to be some standard appeal chances in Football or soccer. What happened to the USA could happen to anyone and there is no excuse for it with all the modern technology that we have in sport today. In hindsight the referee will see that he did make some bad choices but in the heat of the moment he did not have the benefit of watching the video. Perhaps the outcome would have been different if he had seen for himself the construction and execution of the goal. There was no malice intended but the USA was robbed.
