Developing a poker plan

Make no mistake; making money in Online Texas Hold em poker or in any kind of poker isn’t easy. The path to becoming a successful player is often long for many people and impossible for others. But for the ones who are dedicated enough then you still need to have a plan of attack. It isn’t just a case of turning up, doing whatever you want and then making money. It used to be that way some years ago and it may well still be that way for good players who play low enough but when you play against opponents who are relatively good then the environment changes somewhat.

I always think that one of the biggest mistakes that players make in poker is that they either over estimate their own ability relative to their opponents and under estimate their opponents. You are always miles better doing this the other way around as it keeps you safe. In fact I have known numerous players who had a good level of technical knowledge who were simply handicapping themselves by expecting too much form the game. Usually the reason behind this was ego and conceit and I must confess to being guilty of this myself in the past.

But these days I make poker almost like warfare in so much that I never go into it without some kind of a plan. Without a plan then you are simply playing aimlessly. Playing hands is not strategic but tactical when you think about it. Do not get me wrong here, I am not saying that the playing of individual hands is not important because it is. If you were the worst poker player in the world then you would never make money irrespective of how good your strategic plan was. You would simply spew too much money on the tables.

Warfare is won by strategy predominantly and strategy dominates tactics. However tactics are important too because they ensure that the strategy is successful! However in warfare then you cannot survive by just tactics alone and in poker then if all you have going for you is an ability to make very good poker decisions then you will probably make money but you will make far more if you have a plan. It doesn’t really have to be anything intricate but it is better to have a bad plan than no plan at all.

I know one online player who had a plan of buying into poker sites simply for the bonuses. This is strategic if you think about it and not just tactical as it allows you to make money in ways other than the actual playing of the hands which is tactical. However having a plan helps you to make money when the environment that you are in becomes tougher. In fact in my opinion then this is the primary reason for having a plan in the first place. So remember the old phrase of “a bad plan is better than no plan” and remember that well.
