Log-jam in the middle of the U.S. National Team

Used to be the United States produced a steady stream of talented goal-keepers. In fact, Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel and Tim Howard were the first U.S. products to achieve near world-class acclaim. Certainly, in American eyes they already were amongst the best in the world at their position, though they might find some arguments from Europeans. Lately, the United States national team has gone from an embarrassment of riches between the posts, to a pretty stout supply of players running between the 18s. If players made up a Texas Hold’em poker hand, Coach Bob Bradley would have a full house or four-a-kind to play, unfortunately for him, it’s not poker and you can only play so many players in the same position. Right now, his son Michael Bradley headlines the center midfield spot. After an amazing goal-scoring run in Holland, an impressive World Cup performance in South Africa, and another solid season in the Bundeslegia few people can attribute his playing time merely to his last name. Bradley was sort of overlooked when he came up near the same time as Freddy Adu, but it is Bradley that has had the most success of his peers. Maurice Edu, has shined for Rangers, scoring more goals then he does for the National Team, and fooling half the Europeans that barely pay attention to American soccer into thinking he was actually the wunderkind not Freddy Adu. Edu’s World Cup had its flaws, and was not a breakout performance, which Bradley’s almost was, and he has struggled with injury but he’s still a likely cog for future national teams. Jermaine Jones, the son of a U.S. serviceman, just changed nationalities to become another stout mid-fielder. He comes with the baggage of being a feisty player, and one not unwilling to get into it with his manager. He’s currently on the reserves of his club side for just such insubordination. Still, his high level of play in the Bundeslegia for years makes it more likely than not he’ll be featured in the midfield for the United States on a close to permanent basis. Ricardo Clark, is probably on the outside looking in. The young midfielder had some poor moments at the World Cup and is looking for minutes on his club team in Germany. A few years ago merely being on such a high-level club would almost mandate starting for the U.S. That’s a pretty decent four, and they were all Bradley really had to consider just this past summer. Of late that’s changed as a couple of other players have been knocking on the door. At the Confederations Cup two years ago, Jonathan Spector was a revelation. The former Manchester United youth product created goals, got forward, and looked sensational as a fullback. A loss of form at club and country resulted in a demotion at West Ham and left U.S. fans perplexed. Then Avram Grant changed Spector’s position and slotted him in as a defensive midfielder. In his first game he bagged a brace. You can only imagine Bob Bradley watching and wondering where to put the guy. Meanwhile, Spector’s play could be a blip on the screen, as his moments of excellence have tended to be in the past, but what clearly isn’t a blip is the rise of Stuart Holden at Bolton. Holden just scored his second premier league goal, a memorable late winner, moments after Blackburn had tied it and further endeared him to his club. Holden isn’t just contributing he’s been an anchor to the midfield. Probably he’s the guys American fans are most eager to see come into the fold… but where. Then you can factor in Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, and a number of other American contributors that have played well in the middle of the field for the national team when needed, and you can see what should be a blessing could be a big headache for Bradley. What may be the worst part is all these players are really good, but none of them is head and shoulders better than the other. Bradley will have to do his best to split hairs and field his best eleven in the ensuing months, but it’s a much better problem to have, than to be dispirited about having to select someone. The U.S. keepers have dealt with this for a while, and it can only be a positive that some of our outfield players will likely soon experience being top class, but not quite good enough to start for the Stars and Stripes.
