Mekelele in PSGFrench midfielder Claude Makelele is to join Paris St Germain from Chelsea, the Ligue 1 club said on Monday. The 35-year-old former international would be presented at a news conference later in the day, the club said in a statement. Makelele, who joined Chelsea in 2003 from Real Madrid, won 68 caps before announcing his retirement from international soccer after France’s exit from Euro 2008. Considered one of the world’s finest holding midfielders, the Kinshasa-born Makelele becomes PSG’s second major signing in a few days after compatriot Ludovic Giuly, who joined on Friday from AS Roma. PSG, who have won two French titles and lifted the French Cup seven times, struggled to avoid relegation last season. (Reporting by Patrick Vignal; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Ronaldo staying put, says FergusonCristiano Ronaldo will definitely be at Manchester United next season, United coach Alex Ferguson told a news conference on Friday. Ferguson, with the squad on their pre-season tour of South Africa, said he had held talks with the Portuguese winger in Lisbon on Monday after weeks of constant speculation about a possible big money move to Real Madrid. “The meeting went well. I think we both put across our points of view - where we stand and where the player stands,” Ferguson told reporters. “I can say he’ll be a Manchester United player next season. That’s our stance. He won’t be sold.” Ronaldo has persistently spoken of how it would be a “dream” for him to play for Real but the 23-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford until 2012. He scored an impressive 42 goals last term as United won both the Premier League and Champions League.

Portsmouth snub Monaco bid for KranjcarPortsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has rejected a Monaco bid of 12 million pounds (15 million euros) for Croatia midfielder Niko Kranjcar. Kranjcar, 23, is one of Europe’s most promising playmakers and had a key role in Portsmouth’s FA Cup success last season, as well as helping Croatia reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2008. Redknapp has no intention of selling one of his prize assets as he prepares to lead Portsmouth into the UEFA Cup for the first time and was scathing about Monaco’s interest. “Monaco have come in for Niko and offered around 12 million pounds for him,” he told The News. “We wouldn’t sell him and he didn’t want to go anyway so that was the end of that one. “No disrespect, but why would he want to go there anyway? They get 6,000 people watching them. “You go there on a weekend and it’s a unique experience, people aren’t interested in the football. They all go out on the Saturday night and get dressed up for dinner, not to watch football.”

Hleb signs for BarcelonaBelarus international midfielder Alexander Hleb signed for Catalan giants Barcelona from English Premiership side Arsenal for 15million euros on Wednesday on a four year contract which will see him team up again with another former Gunner in Thierry Henry. The move could cost another 2million euros depending on the player’s performances whilst should he wish to leave before his contract ends it would cost the club wishing to buy him 90million euros. “I love this club (Barcelona)” said Hleb, who joined Arsenal from VfB Stuttgart for 11.2million pounds in 2005. “I spoke with (coach Josep) Guardiola and it was very important for me to learn how much he wanted me. “I will give my best for this team and I want to win everything with Barca,” added Hleb, who scored 10 times in 130 Premiership appearances for Arsenal. Hleb’s departure from Arsenal follows that of fellow midfielder Frenchman Mathieu Flamini, who signed for AC Milan earlier this summer, and is likely to be followed by that of 2002 World Cup winning midfielder Gilberto Silva, who is slated for a move to Greek outfit Panathinaikos. Arsenal have moved to fill one of those gaps by signing French international Samir Nasri from Marseille. Barcelona - who have gone two seasons without silverware which led to Frank Rijkaard being sacked and replaced by Guardiola for this season - have sold Portuguese international Deco and on Tuesday two-time world player of the year Ronaldinho. However, Hleb is their fifth signing of the summer, as he follows Malian Seydou Keita from FC Sevilla and three defenders, Spaniard Gerard Pique from Manchester United, Uruguay’s Martin Caceres (Villarreal) and highly-rated Brazilian Daniel Alves also from Sevilla.
